Do Electric Cars Need Special Tyres?
As more UK drivers switch to electric, a common question at the roadside is whether an electric car really needs special tyres. Standard tyres will physically fit, but electric vehicles place very different demands on their tyres, and using the right ones makes a real difference to range, wear, and comfort. Here is what you need to know.
Why EVs are harder on tyres
Electric cars differ from petrol and diesel cars in three ways that all affect the tyres. They are significantly heavier because of their battery packs, they deliver instant torque the moment you press the accelerator, and they are much quieter, so road and tyre noise is far more noticeable inside the cabin.
The combination of extra weight and instant power means the tyres work harder and can wear noticeably faster than on an equivalent petrol car, especially if the car is driven enthusiastically.
What makes an EV tyre different
- Reinforced sidewalls and higher load ratings to carry the extra battery weight
- Tougher, more durable tread compounds to cope with instant torque and reduce wear
- Low rolling resistance to preserve driving range and efficiency
- Noise-reducing designs, often with a layer of foam inside the tyre to absorb road noise
- Strong grip to manage the longer stopping distances of a heavier vehicle
Do you have to use EV-specific tyres?
You are not legally required to fit EV-branded tyres, and a standard tyre of the correct size, load index, and speed rating is roadworthy on an electric car. However, fitting tyres that are not built for the weight and torque can mean faster wear, more road noise, and reduced range. Many premium tyres are now designed to suit both conventional and electric cars, so the key is choosing a tyre with the right load rating and quality rather than simply the cheapest option.
Getting the load rating right
Because an EV is heavier, the load index on its tyres matters even more than usual. Always match or exceed the load rating specified by your manufacturer, and never fit a lower-rated tyre to save money. If you are unsure what your electric car needs, the markings on your current tyres and your handbook will confirm the correct specification.
Replacing EV tyres
Because EV tyres can wear faster, it is worth checking them regularly and keeping pressures correct, as underinflation increases both wear and energy use. When the time comes to replace them, a mobile tyre fitter can supply the correct EV-suitable tyres and fit them at your home or workplace, which is especially convenient when you can keep the car on charge while the work is done.
